How many months do you need?

The "3 to 6 months" rule is a starting point, not a law. Slide it based on your real risk:

  • 3 months — stable salary, dual income, easily re-hired skills, no dependents.
  • 6 months — the default for most households.
  • 9–12 months — single earner, self-employed or commission income, specialized job, or supporting dependents.
Build it in stages. A $1,000 starter fund first stops small surprises from becoming credit-card debt; then grow toward the full target while you tackle other goals.
