The hidden cost of a long loan
Dealers love to sell on monthly payment, not price — which is why 72- and 84-month loans are everywhere. They shrink the payment but balloon the interest and keep you underwater (owing more than the car's worth) for years. Compare the "total interest" figure above across terms and you'll feel it.
Rule of thumb: if you can't afford a car on a 48–60 month loan with 10–20% down, it's probably more car than your budget should carry.
